ECW One Night Stand 2006

“IF CENA WINS, WE RIOT!”

Theme of the night was WWE v. ECW and ushering in the rebirth and new breed of Extreme Championship Wrestling.

Paul Heyman Promo

Heyman hypes up the ECW faithful letting them know that the hardcore spirit still lives and ECW would be reborn on the Sci-Fi Channel the following Tuesday. And once again he reassures us that this is E C F*CKING W!!! We would soon learn that it wasn’t as Vince McMahon had other plans.

Tazz v. Jerry Lawler

Not really a match but it was funny when King bitch slapped Joey Styles. King ends up getting choked out with the Tazzmission.

Kurt Angle v. Randy Orton

A lot of people didn’t like this match but I was into it! It had a nice pace and Angle performed some good mat wrestling. I don’t think some of the “p*ssy” or “you can’t wrestle” chants were inappropriate towards Orton in this match. Sometimes the ECW fans can be a little too cynical. It was a good thing Orton didn’t punch that kid that hit him in his cool entrance. Never the less, the crowd is hot, this was a good match and Angle is a Wrestling Machine.

Full Blooded Italians v. Tajiri & Super Crazy

ECW seems to always be good about showcasing talent from different origins and this was a nice cruiserweight tag match. Big Show makes his ECW debut and manhandles everyone.

** 3/4

JBL Promo

JBL once again shoots on ECW and their fans but no one interrupts him this time. Not as much fun.

Extreme Rules Match for the World Heavyweight Championship
Rey Mysterio (c) v. Sabu

This match was really good, fast paced and innovative that got cut too short when it was really starting to get to that next level. Match should have continued after that insane DDT through the table. “Holy Sh*t” moment for sure.

Six-Person Extreme Rules Tag Team Match
Edge, Mick Foley & Lita v. Tommy Dreamer, Terry Funk & Beulah

“I know you (Lita) like threesomes, so let’s just make this official. Three on three, time to put up or shut up BITCH!” - Beulah

This match was mayhem all over the arena with chairs, ladders and tables. Terry Funk is truly crazed when he enters the ring; he was throwing stiff left hands and flipping chairs all over the place. He attempted a Moonsault off a 15 foot ladder but was knocked straight into the canvas by Edge.

Plenty of barbed wire action with barbed wire whips, bats and beds wrapped in it. Foley tried to ripe Funk’s eye out with barbed wire which lead to Funk being a bloody mess and “YOU SICK F*CK” chants from a grossed out audience.

This left Tommy and Beulah to be taken advantage of and boy did they ever. Barbed wire bat to Tommy’s balls and Edge played “doggie style” with Beulah until Funk came back bandaged up and with a huge 2x4 wrapped with a whole lot of barbed wire. Funk kicks Foley and Edge’s asses with the 2x4 and then proceeds to ignite it with lighter fluid. Funk hits Foley in the back which sets his back on fire! And then Foley gets thrown into a bed of barbed wire! OH MY GOD! Funk soon joins him when Edge knocks him into the bed too.

Tommy is definitely the” Innovator of Violence” when he put Edge in a barbed wire Crippler Crossface. But Lita intervenes which leads Beulah in and we have ourselves a (Joey Styles before puberty voice) CATFIGHT!!!

What I thought was a double standard is when Tommy Dreamer hit a Dreamer Driver on Lita Tazz said, “Drop that Bitch!” But the next minute when Edge spears Beulah he says, “Edge is a Son of a Bitch.” Still best pin cover ever!

“This is Awesome” and Match of the Night. I love the anarchy!

**** 1/2

Masato Tanaka v. Balls Mahoney

Match was too short but Tanaka takes some stiff chair shots to the head again but this time from the “chair swinging freak” – BALLS.

Eugene Promo

I was so happy to see Eugene get caned by Sandman. Certainly a long time coming.

Extreme Rules Match for the WWE Championship
John Cena v. Rob Van Dam

The crowd exploded in two different extreme ways as was expected when RVD and John Cena made their entrances. They can’t “Whole F*cking Show” for RVD and “F*ck You Cena” to the WWE poster boy.

Some other crazy chants for Cena that we heard from this passionate crowd were:

“Same old Sh*t”
“You Can’t Wrestle”
“F*ck him up, Van Dam, F*ck him up (clap, clap)”

Cena even played a little heelish throughout the match by putting his feet on the ropes and little things like holding up the title belt showing it wasn’t going anywhere. It was funny when he threw his hat and shirt into the crowd and they threw it right back at him with middle fingers and derogatory remarks. The atmosphere was top notch and better than WM 22 but the match wasn’t.

The end saw Edge screwed Cena out of the title with a spear through a table in the corner and RVD capitalized with a Five Star Frog Splash on Cena. It was only fitting that Paul Heyman made the three count for RVD to finally win the “Big One” and become WWE Champion. I was proud for RVD as he celebrated in the crowd with his wife and in the ring with the new Extremists.

*** 1/2

Great PPV and I actually enjoyed the matches more this time around. The ECW crowd is always so hyped and excited about wrestling which makes the event all the more special.
